An
Ayurveda
Snapshot
“From an Ayurvedic perspective human beings are not
viewed as mere thinking physical machines, but rather as
fields of intelligence in dynamic exchange with the energy
and information of the environment.”
Deepak Chopra

Realizing that an unhealthy body not only makes life more
difficult, it can be a big distraction on our path to raise our
consciousness. The body is a mirror of what is going on in
the mind, and vice versa. When our mind is clear and serene,
so is our body. Ayurveda embraces the importance of
consciousness as the ground state of existence. Therefore
creating perfect health can be fostered through changes in
awareness, thoughts, interpretation and choices.
There are three mind-body types, called doshas, and we each
are born with our own unique combination of these.  Usually
two are dominate, with one being more influential than the
other. See the link to the side of the page to take the dosha
quiz on the Chopra Center website. Of course we don’t have
space to give individual recommendations according to your
dosha here, but we do give private consultations and classes
on the topic.
Below are general guidelines regarding eating that
everybody can follow to begin a path to perfect health. You
will notice it’s important to have a sense of
presence.

 BITS   (Body Intelligence Techniques)

INCLUDE all six tastes at every meal. Sour, sweet, bitter,
astringent, pungent, salty
EAT in a quiet, settled, comfortable environment
EAT only when you feel hungry
DO NOT eat when you are upset
ALWAYS sit down to eat
REDUCE ice-cold foods and beverages
EAT at a comfortable pace; stay conscious of the process
LISTEN to your appetite: digest the previous meal before
starting the next one.
DON’T overeat; leave 1/4 to 1/3 of your stomach empty to
aid digestion
EAT freshly prepared foods. Lightly cooked foods are
preferable to raw or overcooked
FAVOR fruits, vegetables and grains, warm milk, almonds
SIT quietly for a few minutes after finishing your meal
Focus your attention on the sensations in your body, then
take a short walk.

Ayurveda covers the importance of taking care of the body
through nourishment, exercise, massage, aromatherapy, and
assisting our natural inner pharmacy through food, plants,
herbs and detoxification. There are also guidelines for health
emotionally, mentally, and spiritually through meditation
and yoga. It is such a vast topic that one could never learn it
all in one's lifetime! At its most basic form however, it really
is simple, and this is what the Chopra Center course helps us
discover.
