Mapping Levels
of Consciousness
What is consciousness anyway? If we take the broadest view, everything is
consciousness. And there really is no other view. From the field of
quantum physics researchers are coming up with models of the universe
that support the idea that there is a matrix underlying everything, and it
responds to every action and thought. We know that when we reduce
matter to its smallest particle we eventually arrive at pure energy. This
energy is aware. Could this matrix, from which all arises, be what we call
God? That is where this research seems to be leading.
There is an observable level of consciousness (awareness) for every stage in
human thought/behavior and culture on a scale of evolution, from the
primal, survival beginnings, to more and more awareness. This gives us a
map.
Our ego can take us to the hard, provable scientific edge. And scientists
are somewhat bewildered that it seems near impossible to break through
this ‘edge’. Transcending this edge will take a paradigm shift. We cannot
break into the knowledge found in the higher levels of consciousness using
the normal operating mode of our ego and merely manipulating matter.
Intellect can only take us so far. We must go beyond the ego; tapping into
the greater matrix of consciousness wherein knowledge (truth) is
something of which one has direct experience. Down through the ages
there have been those that offered a view of the world that was mysterious,
magical, and intriguing, and their apparent experience had transcended
suffering. Most of these teachers told their students that they, too, can
transcend the egoic suffering and be free. They left a map, and we, with the
aid of current enlightened teachers, can learn to traverse these levels
eventually reaching those places inside us that hold the infinite knowledge
that is our birthright.
There is a lot going on in our planet today with humanity exhibiting the
whole spectrum of consciousness levels at work. There are extremes of
every thought pattern and action. One thing we have going for us is the
extraordinary number of humans on the earth today that are waking up.
This has never happened before. These ‘awakened’ individuals are
becoming aware of what underlies everything. They are babes in a freshly
seen world of contrast trying to figure out which way to go, where to focus,
how to help.
The best teachers on the planet today are all saying the same thing. Evolve.
Grow, wake up, go within, be peaceful, find yourself, and realize who you
really are. That’s all. And when we do that—we will be aligned with the
greater reality and what we do will be for the highest good of all.
Just as it helps in your financial life to have a plan, goals, a vision of your
success, so too does it help to see where you are going on your path to
raise your consciousness level and find your own purpose. A scale of the
levels of consciousness makes it easier to see where you are and then you
can see the next step. There are different 'maps', and we have even come up
with our own for financial levels of awareness called the ‘Map of Money
Consciousness’™Click here to see the Map
In the works of Dr. Don Edward Beck Ph. D., with his Spiral Dynamics, Dr.
David Hawkins M.D. Ph. D., with his Map of the Scale of Consciousness,
Ken Wilbur, philosopher with his Integral Psychology that combines
consciousness study with spirit, psychology and therapy, and many others,
we have ample resources to devise a map for ourselves.
And we mustn't leave out the ancient Vedic seers, who somewhere around
5000 years ago left us their map through the Rig Veda, Bhagavad Gita and
other amazing other-worldly bodies of work.
Why do we want to raise our consciousness level? Because each
succeeding point brings greater effectiveness, greater peace, greater joy
and prosperity. On the lower levels we find people are barely scratching
out a living, focusing outside themselves for survival, and on the next rung
using force to get what they want. The higher levels show more people
going within, where our power lies. As Dr. Hawkins tells us, power is
directly from our source of consciousness, and power gives us far more
control over our lives than force. There is also a graduating shift in
awareness of ones own destiny. Take the example of people in South
Carolina, questioned about what they planned to do and how they felt
when they heard the news of a hurricane heading for their shores. The most
educated and aware group made concrete plans, internally directed to take
action to minimize losses. This group felt it was up to them to take
responsibility for what happens in their personal experience. The reaction
in the lowest socio-economic groups was that whatever happened to them
was fate; they couldn't change outcome for themselves. They felt
vulnerable, but were unmoved to take action to create a better outcome.
They put that responsibility outside of themselves. Overall there is a wide
range of preparedness and responsibility in any event, determined by
where someone’s consciousness falls on the scale or map
What we have done is combine these works and distill them down to a
simplistic map that we can readily use. It is an ongoing, flexible map
because new ideas are always emerging from the leading edge of mass
consciousness. We also believe Dr. Don Beck is right when he explains how
our growth is in a spiral, and Ken Wilbur adds that the levels we move
through always remain present within the current level. We are an
accumulation of our history; personally and that of the whole human
species. The Vedic (Sanskrit) word for this is Karma.
This is a deep, endless subject of research, and by no means are we able to
explain it in a concise form, we just mean to give a glimpse into these
amazing ideas so when you view the levels of consciousness you have
some reference.
